The Arch of Hadrian was built to honor the visit of emperor Hadrian to Jerash in 129/130 A.D. Jerash is known for the ruins of the Greco-Roman city of Gerasa, also referred to as Antioch on the Golden River.

Jerash was the home of Nicomachus of Gerasa (Greek: Νικόμαχος) (c. 60 – c. 120) who is known for his works Introduction to Arithmetic (Arithmetike eisagoge), The Manual of Harmonics and The Theology of Numbers.

Recent excavations show that Jerash was already inhabited during the Bronze Age (3200 BC - 1200 BC).

The Street of Columns, was originally flanked by 260 columns on either side, and all the principal public buildings of the city had their entrance from it.

The Nymphaeum in Jerash, Jordan, was constructed 191 A.D. and dedicated to the nymphs.

The Street of Columns...here were the best shops, and the cuts made by the weels of many passing chariots can still be seen in the great paving blocks.

Jerash (Jarash) was first identified as Gerasa by the German explorer Ulrich Seetzen in 1806.

Jerash was excavated beginning in the 1920s by several scholars including Arthur Segal at the University of Haifa.

Greater cities, such as Gadara and Philadelphia, have vanished almost without trace, but the remoteness of Jerash has saved it from being used as a stone quarry for nearby towns and villages.

Jerash is one of the most complete examples of a provincial Roman city to be seen anywhere.

Jerash....the archaeological site is popular for tourists, second only to Petra.

Jerash, at one time a city of the Decapolis, and the only one of that powerful league through whose streets and monuments we can wander and see them as they were in its heyday, untouched except by the hand of time.

The South Tetrapylon witch is greek for ( a.k.a. four gates) is the intersection of Jerashs Cardo with the first cross street in the ancient ruins dated to the Roman period at the end of the 2nd century AD.
